Book Review
Church Unplugged
by David Male
Review by Jill Morrison
"The biggest change we face is that for the past thousand years the church has been at the centre of our life as a nation, but now its influence is fast waning." - David Male
Church Unplugged reviews the journey Dave and his wife Heather made as they created a new church in Huddersfield as part of ‘Fresh Expressions’. Dave recounts honestly the ups and downs of this venture, giving us an insight into today’s culture and how the church can meet the needs of our changing society. In the face of declining church attendance it is a refreshing and encouraging read.
The book is helpful not only to those who are involved in setting up a new church but for anyone who is interested in making their present church more user-friendly, with lots of ideas which could be incorporated into church life. It is easy to read and as someone who is not just a theorist but is a practitioner, Dave helps to explain modern day church.
Dave looks at changing the way things are done, keeping in mind the biblical example we have been set and constantly looking back at what God tells us through the bible, not diluting God through the modernisation process.
Each chapter has useful and practical questions at the end of each chapter to help study and reflection either as an individual or as a group. It is also well referenced and gives lots of opportunity for further reading around this fascinating subject.
